What is Fatty Liver Disease?

The accumulation of excess fat in the liver cells is known as Fatty Liver Disease. When the diet of person exceeds the amount of fat that his/her body can handle, it gives rise to fatty tissue that slowly builds up in the liver. If there is excess build up of fat in the liver, the liver then becomes more prone to injury, which can also result in inflammation.

What are the variants of Fatty Liver?

There are two types of Fatty Liver Disease:

Alcoholic Liver Disease: It is caused by drinking excess alcohol
Non-Alcoholic Liver Disease: It is caused by being overweight

What are the causes of Fatty Liver Disease?

There are a number of things that can lead to Fatty Liver Disease. The two most common causes are:


  • Drinking excessive alcohol
  • Being obese or overweight- these conditions also lead in developing other conditions like diabetes or high cholesterol, which can also cause Fatty Liver Disease

Besides obesity, the other causes of Fatty Liver Disease are:


  • Rapid Weight loss
  • Bypass surgery for obesity
  • Starvation
  • Protein malnutrition
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • High blood pressure
  • Genetic influence
What are the symptoms of Fatty Liver Disease?

Mostly Fatty Liver Disease has no symptoms. However one may feel tired, or experience pain and discomfort on the right side of the body, just below the ribs. The pain is usually caused due to the growing amount of fat in the liver which causes it to expand and hence stretching the sensitive membrane that covers the liver.

Which consultant should be consulted for Fatty Liver Disease?

One should consult a General Physician or a Gastroenterologist for Fatty Liver Disease.

What treatment is recommended to the people diagnosed with Fatty Liver Disease?

If a person is diagnosed with Fatty Liver Disease then it is highly recommended to stop drinking alcohol, as excess of alcohol can develop into alcoholic hepatitis or even cirrhosis. If consumption of alcohol is avoided then the liver will recover from hepatitis and Fatty Liver Disease. For people diagnosed with Non-Alcoholic Liver Disease, there is no specific treatment, though lifestyle changes can help in reducing the amount of fat present in the liver.

Can Fatty Liver Disease be prevented?

The number one reason for Fatty Liver Disease-obesity can be prevented with a proper healthy life style. Along with a healthy diet, exercising for weight loss is equally important. A balanced diet which is low in fats and high in fibre should be taken. Alcohol should be totally avoided to prevent accumulation of fat in the liver.
