What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome encompasses any disorder of the intestines which leads to a disturbance in the bowel movements. The intestines are an important part of the digestive system along with the stomach. Disturbance in this system leads to irregular bowel movements and related problems. Many people are affected by this condition and it is more prevalent in women.

What causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

The causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome may include certain foods, stress, hormones, anxiety and certain medications may cause this condition.

Digestion is an important process performed by the organs of the body and for which there has to be a co-ordination between the brain and parts of digestive system. Any changes in this pattern may cause Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Increased Sensitivity of intestines may also be a cause. The causes are different for different people.

What are the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

The symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome include:


  • Pain in the stomach and bloating
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • Presence of mucus in the stools
  • Feeling of bowel movement again and again
How is Irritable Bowel Syndrome diagnosed?

The doctor may diagnose this condition by the presence of the symptoms. Sometimes the doctor may suggest certain blood tests and stool tests to rule out any other underlying conditions.

The Gastroenterologist is the expert to consult for severe symptoms.

Can this condition be cured?

There is no permanent cure, but the symptoms can be well managed by avoiding the risk factors or triggers which cause this condition. Once the cause is identified it becomes easy to treat the condition.

This condition is chronic or long term and therefore avoiding of the trigger helps in keeping the symptoms under control.

Can it be prevented?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome can lead to 2 conditions; either constipation or diarrhoea.

A well balanced diet full of fibre and daily exercises helps prevent constipation.

In case of diarrhoea, avoiding of triggers, stress and anxiety helps in managing the symptoms.

The conclusion is that a well balanced healthy diet and lifestyle changes which do not include smoking, contribute towards a healthy system.
