What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis or Rhinosinusitis is an infection or inflammation in the nasal cavity, which is basically caused by an infection, allergy or by autoimmune disorders. Sinuses are filled with air, but when they are blocked and filled with germs and fluid, they tend to multiply and cause an infection.

What are the variants of Sinusitis?

There are three variants of Sinusitis.

Acute Sinusitis: An infection which may last up to 4 weeks or less.

Sub acute Sinusitis: An infection which may last between 4 to12 weeks.

Chronic Sinusitis: A condition which is characterized by symptoms that last for more than 12 weeks.

Recurrent Sinusitis: Several attacks of Sinusitis within a year are described as Recurrent Sinusitis.

What are the signs and symptoms of Sinusitis?

The symptoms of Acute Sinusitis are as follows:

  • Pain or pressure in the face
  • Nasal stuffiness
  • Nasal discharge
  • Cough

  • Bad breath
  • Fatigue
  • Dental Pain

The symptoms of Chronic Sinusitis are as follows:


  • Facial Congestion
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Fever
  • Nasal discharge
  • Pus in nasal cavity

  • Bad breath
  • Dental pain
  • Fatigue
What complications are associated with Sinusitis?

There are a lot of complications that are associated with Sinusitis. Acute Sinusitis can trigger an asthma attack or can even give rise to a long term problem, known as Chronic Sinusitis. And if the infection spreads to the lining of the brain, than the brain can get affected and give rise to meningitis. If the treatment is delayed, one has to suffer from unnecessary pain and discomfort.

What lifestyle changes are required to prevent Sinusitis?

Smoking should be strictly avoided, and water consumption should be increased as it helps to thin the secretions. No special diet is required to prevent Sinusitis.
