Wooden Energy

A report published in the Nano Letters journal states that scientists have attempted to create a battery out of wood. The battery made from the sliver of wood holds promise of being an environment–friendly energy source.

The battery which is tiny, long–lasting and efficient is made from wood fibres. These wood fibres are flexible to retain mineral–rich water similar to the electrolyte in batteries. The wood was used as a base of an experimental sodium–ion battery as sodium is environment–friendly when compared to lithium.

The new battery was successful during lab experiments, lasting longest amongst sodium–ion batteries through 400 charge–discharge cycles. Scientists see the battery as a technology capable of benefitting the energy applications such as wind farms or solar energy installations.
