Better Version of Spaser Technology

Phone on a Cloth

Researchers from Monash University’s Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (ECSE) have modelled a spaser made completely out of carbon. Spaser stands for ‘surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation’ which is a nanoscale laser or nanolaser that emits a beam of light through the vibration of free electrons.

The new version of spaser being made out of carbon makes it tougher, flexible, eco friendly and temperature resistant. It is a potential alternative to current-transistor based devices such as microprocessors, memory and displays.

Scientists say these properties could lead to an extremely thin mobile phone being printed on cloth. The new spaser is tougher because it incorporates graphene and carbon nanotubes which are hundred times stronger than steel and have better electricity and heat conduction than copper.
