Green Fuel

A move that could change the face of aviation industry by reducing greenhouse gas emission is on the cards of United Airlines, an American airline company. The company intends to invest $30 million in one of the largest producers of aviation biofuels; Fulcrum BioEnergy. This will be the biggest investment so far by a domestic airline in the lucrative field of biofuel. The announcement by the company in this regard could come as early as next week.

Biofuels have for long been considered as an alternative to jet fuels as it has the potential to reduce green house gas emissions. The United States government in June proposed to frame new limits on carbon emissions. Similarly, International Civil Aviation Organisation; a United Nations agency is on its way to propose guidelines on limiting carbon pollution by February 2016.

United airlines said that for the first two weeks, four to five flights in a day will constitute fuel mixture of 30 percent biofuel and 70 percent traditional fuel. Thereafter, the same composition will be blended in the overall fuel supply.
