Crystals That Can Absorb Carbon Dioxide

Carbon Sponge

Scientists from the Sydney University have been developing with positive progress a crystalline substance which can absorb and retain carbon dioxide. The ‘molecular sponges’ created by them are said to soak up carbon gases and hold on to them.

The researchers created crystals which consisted of minute holes which can hang on to gases like carbon dioxide. The chemical frameworks of these crystals are so full of pores that they have greater surface area to absorb gases than can be expected of their size.

The scientists claim that a teaspoon of these crystals can absorb the gas over an area of a rugby field. Its main function, the researchers say is to retain greenhouse gases over the various industries, factories to absorb and protect the environment. However, the commercial adaptation would take a few years.
