Crystals that Absorb Carbon dioxide

Carbon Sponge

Scientists from Sydney University are developing a crystalline substance that can absorb and retain carbon dioxide. The ‘molecular sponges’ created by them are said to soak up the greenhouse gases and hold on to them.

Researchers created crystals that consisted of minute holes and can hang on to gases such as carbon dioxide. The chemical framework of these crystals is so full of pores that they have a greater surface area to absorb gases than their size.

Scientists claim that a teaspoon of these crystals can absorb gas over an area equal to a rugby field. Researchers say its main function is to absorb greenhouse gases over various industries and factories to protect the environment. However, its commercial adaptation would take a few years.
