Gargantuan Galaxy

In what could open up more mysteries about the outer world, astronomers have discovered a gargantuan galaxy cluster that produces 800 stars every year. The galaxy is 9.8 billion years away from earth.

The galaxy discovered with the help of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope is located in the heart of a cluster named SpARCS1049+56. This is the first instance wherein a gigantic galaxy has been found that is located at the centre of a massive cluster. These clusters are usually made of stellar fossils in which old, red or dead stars can grow significantly by consuming gas stolen from other galaxies.

Another striking revelation is that the galaxy is merging with a smaller galaxy that is acting as a source for gas. This is the first known case of wet merger in which gas is converted into stars upon collision.
