Mobile Radiation Possibly Linked to Cancer: Study

Carcinogenic Mobile Radiation

A study undertaken by the US government to determine the dangers of mobile phone radiation has suggested that there is a link between mobile phone usage and cancer.

Researchers from the National Toxicology Program exposed male rats to the commonly emitted mobile phone radiations for two years. After the conclusion of the experiment, low incidences of two types of tumours were found in both the rodents’ heart and brain. More than 2,500 rats were a part of this experiment wherein rats not exposed to radiation did not develop tumour. “This is by far - far and away - the most carefully done cell phone bioassay, a biological assessment,” said Christopher Portier, the retired head of the National Toxicology Program who launched the study. This is a classic study that is done for trying to understand cancers in humans. There will have to be a lot of work after this to assess if it causes problems in humans, but the fact that you can do it in rats will be a big issue. It actually has me concerned, and I'm an expert.”

The study is believed to be one of the largest and most comprehensive related to mobile phones and cancer. Previous studies have shown a link between mobile phone use and cancer but they have been criticised for their small sample size and methodology.
