Robotic Generation

Scientists from the University of Cambridge have created ‘mother robot’ that can build babies out of mechanised blocks and then create new ones that evolve from the previous generation.

The mother robot was tasked with creating 10 robot children, and after their creation the children were tested for speed to see how much distance they covered in a stipulated time. After the test, the slow moving robots were re-designed which doubled their speeds as compared to the robots of the first generation. The process is similar to biological evolution wherein mother robot watched for the best traits in her children and then used these traits to improve the next generation.

Scientists for the first time replicated the process of natural selection in machines and it could be the next big thing in regards to artificial intelligence. The experiment sheds a light on how human evolution took place over the years.
