Self Destructing Chip

Scientists from Novel Electronics Group at PARC, California have designed a tempered glass chip that self destructs in seconds when triggered remotely. Researchers say this technology could secure sensitive data.

The new technology uses silicon computer wafers attached to a piece of tempered glass that shatters into small pieces when heated in one spot. Scientists say, at present, heat could only be triggered remotely but in future it could be triggered via anything such as Wi-Fi or radio frequency signal.

The tempered glass, an extra strength material also known as safety glass, is used for making self destructing electronics. Since glass is a poor temperature conductor, the safety glass kind of explodes and shatters explosively into little pieces upon getting heated. The new technology will also allow for easier recycling of electronics.
