Spacecraft Controlled by Thoughts

Mind-space travel

Researchers from the University of Essex led by computer science professor Ricardo Poli have used brain-computer interface (BCI) to control a spacecraft simulator. It simply means that users can control and pilot a simulated spacecraft with their mind. The technology can be used by astronauts to pilot real spacecrafts with their thoughts.

The experiment was conducted in a simulator in simplified environment and therefore working with the same in space with an additional weight of hulking spacesuits would be challenging for astronauts.

Adequate training however, could help astronauts overcome this problem. Lesser gravity in space would slow down astronauts’ motor skills making it difficult for him or her to co-ordinate appropriately. However, through this technology, astronauts can easily control the spacecraft. Such technology would not only be useful in space but also in high-stress situations on earth in times of emergencies.
