Trans Fat Attack

Researchers from different Canadian institutions in a study have stated that transfats are known to increase death risk due to any cause including cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease (CHD). They however asserted that a reasonable amount of saturated fat in the diet is not harmful.

Researchers for the study included data from 41 studies between saturated fat intake and health outcomes which covered more than 300,000 people and 20 studies of transfat intake and health outcomes which covered more than 200,000 people. In the analysis that followed, scientists concluded that saturated fat intake was not tied to CHD, cardiovascular disease, stroke or type 2 diabetes. There was however ambiguity over the risk of death from CHD due to saturated fats.

Transfat on the other hand was found to up mortality rates by 34%, with 28% increase in death due to heart disease and 21% increase in heart disease. It is recommended that saturated fat constitute 10% of daily diet which includes butter, egg yolks and salmon. The daily consumption of transfats such as hydrogenated oils should however be limited to 1% as they are manufactured in industries.
