Tech giant Microsoft is now exploring the possibility of storing data in DNA; the oldest living thing in the world. This could possibly avert the danger of a future data apocalypse.

In order to make this Zen-like idea possible, Microsoft has acquired 10 million long strands of DNA molecules from Twist Bioscience so that it can start testing the capability of DNA’s long term secure data storage. DNA can fit almost 1 billion terabytes of data into just one gram. This makes it far more efficient than any other form of storage. Moreover, data in DNA manages to stay for a long time, up to 2,000 years or more.

Another promising factor behind using DNA is that its costs have dropped drastically from about $3 billion in 2003 to $1000 at present.
