Pedalling Desks to Keep Sedentary Workers Fit
Work Healthy
A study published in the ‘American Journal of Preventive Medicine’ has stated that allowing employees to pedal while they are working will make them more productive and keep them fit. The research undertaken by Lucas Carr from the University of Iowa (UI), US reports that desks with pedals can help workers fight the ill-effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
The research established that portable pedalling device under working desks helps people to move without getting up. 27 employees from ACT Inc. participated in a 16-week experiment conducted by Carr. In the ensuing study it was found that workers who pedalled more are likely to improve concentration and report weight loss.
Carr after the study said that design of the pedalling device is very important and that privacy was significant i.e. a treadmill desk which everyone uses will be a bad idea to keep employees fit. Instead a personal pedalling device for workers will be more acceptable. Surprisingly after the experiment 70 percent of the participants preferred to keep the pedalling device. Sedentary lifestyle is characterised by multiple chronic diseases, poorer cognitive function, and mental distress.
