Comet 107p/Wilson-Harrington 4015

Minor planets are small solar bodies that orbit the sun and have gravity but are not influential enough. Asteroids are small and large rocky bodies with eccentric orbits found in the orbit between Mars and Jupiter. On the other hand, comets are small bodies of ice, dust and gas, which form a tail when travelling towards the sun. Comet Wilson–Harrington is one such unique celestial object that displays unique characteristics of all the three, namely a comet, an asteroid and a minor planet. Comet Wilson is closer to being a comet that exhibits sudden outbursts of brightness. But, it has the unique classification of a comet as well as a minor planet, which is an asteroidal–type.

Comet 17p/ Holmes

Captured by the strong gravity of the giant planet Jupiter, the comet now called 17P/ Holmes was a part of the distant Kuiper belt. Propelled into our solar system by Jupiter, comet Holmes became a short–period comet and a member of the Jupiter family. The most noticeable characteristic of this comet is the sudden surge or an explosion of brightness it exhibits in its apparition. While exhibiting brightness on such a massive scale, the comet appears larger than the sun. However, the surge of its brightness still remains a mystery. A spectacular vision for stargazers, comet Holmes remains one of the brightest comets. Like all the other celestial bodies, it also orbits the sun. Let us understand this comet in detail.

Comet103p/Hartley 2

The Kuiper belt region beyond the cold and distant planet of Neptune teems with millions of celestial objects called comets. Made up of ice, gas and dust, these comets may be remnants of the mysterious origin of the Universe. One such comet is comet 103P/Hartley 2, which is also known as a ‘weird’ dwarf comet due to its small size. Pioneer space agency NASA described comet Hartley as ‘a hyperactive little comet spewing more water than most comets its size’. This comet has received a visit from NASA mission EPOXI in 2010. Ranked as 103, it is a short–period comet of the Jupiter family and may herald a new breed of comets.
